Why do people get pissed off during bonus time?

February 26, 2008

Its end February and if I’m right you’ve probably spent all your bonus. Unless you’re working for a company whose financial year ends in some weird month like June.

But is bonus time a happy time or cranky time for you? Companies are consistent when it comes to bonuses. They’re either consistently generous or consistently stingy (mostly stingy) no matter how much money they’re making.

My last company would get all coy if you ask how they calculate bonus. Its up to the directors they’d say. So in other words if the directors want to grab all the money to buy their mistresses a house, you’ll only get 1 month. Less if they want to buy a house AND don’t like your face.

But seriously, if bonus time is a time when you go around dropping hints about resigning if you get anything less than 3 months, you’ve got a reality check to do. Unlike salary, a bonus is bonus. Its an optional gift. An ang pow. You know how to get more ang pows? By behaving nice and cute to uncle and auntie. So have you been nice and cute?

Like all kids we like to compare our ang pows and we get besotted by red-packet envy. I did too to be honest. Oh how things change when you become the giver.

Take it from me, getting a red packet with 1 dollar in it is way better than getting none at all.

I think most people will think of 1 dollar angpow as an insult and be worse than none at all. hehe
