Why do people call Obama black?

June 10, 2008

I don’t get it. His father’s a Kenyan. His mother is a white lady from Kansas. So why are they calling him the black or the African American candidate?

My cousin’s mother is Chinese. Her father is a white man from Minneapolis. Yet since grade school she’s called Asian American.

So in the US, it appears that if a white person is married to a colored person, in what must be one of the WTF moments in life, the offspring will be identified with the colored parent. Apprently its the milk and coffee rule. When you mix half a cup of coffee with half a cup of milk, you call it coffee with milk and not milk with coffee. You see, some people have not discovered capuccino-flavored milk yet.

But people aren’t coffee and I find it silly when someone claims he is against racial stereotyping but happily refers to others by the color of their skin. I mean hello… by labeling someone black aren’t you perpetuating the very stereotype you claim to avoid? Obama’s half white half black. A sensationalist press is doing a good job declaring him black. If the Democrats are attempting to neutralize this racial bugbear by ignoring it, its not working as all the polls have shown.

And through such silence and therefore complicity, that is how Obama will be remembered. Not as the champion of Change but as the black President.

Yes, there are stupid people in America.

I don’t see how acknowledging someone’s skin color has anything to do with perpetuating stereotypes. I mean…do you think the sky gets offended if you call it blue? If someone is offended by you acknowledging the color of their skin, it is their problem. Not yours.

But the fact that generally speaking people that are half white are not acknowldged as white…yea i’ve noticed that too.
