Higher prices make a better planet

June 19, 2008

Some interesting things are happening with my friends after the fuel hike.

Chicken rice has replaced Sushi King for workday lunches. Chili’s and Italianies are cut down to once a month. I don’t hear any more talk about the latest gadgets. The mention of sales didn’t trigger the usual “Hmmm what shall I get” response. One is rethinking her holiday to Perth. Another is selling off his weekend car and buying a little scooter for quick runs to the neighborhood store.

Ouch for the supply chain. Its now got a few less cows to feed. A hundred more barrels of oil people won’t buy. A ton less metal to mine for new cars. An acre less trees to cut down to make souveniers and holiday chalets. The planet smiles.

All in all, the fuel hike had achieved more in 1 week than environmental campaigning had achieved in 1 year. Pain works.
