Movies that change your outlook

August 17, 2008

Once in a great while, along comes a movie that you’ll remember for life. There is one such movie for me and its not Transformers or Batman. Lets see if these two phrases jog your mind.

Consider God’s handiwork, who can straighten what He hath made crooked?
– Ecclesiastes 7:13

I not only think that we will tamper with Mother Nature, I think Mother wants us to.
– Willard Gaylin

They are flashed in the first few seconds of the show. The movie first aired 10 years ago and is currently showing on HBO. Its about life in a future society bred on eugenics, where people are discriminated according to gene superiority. It centers around how two people – an athlete who didn’t reach his goal despite his superior advantages, and an “invalid” who despite his deficiencies made it to become an interplanetary crew member through sheer will and spirit – proved the system wrong beatable.

Its Gattaca.

Gattaca left me with some impressions I’ve treated as “truths” for some time:

  • Perfect bodies don’t always equal perfect minds
  • Compassion and happiness are somehow interlinked
  • I finally understood why pictures of spaceships leaving earth are so exciting. As a species we are actually quite mental and the only way to get away from it is to, well, get away from it.
  • Minimalist designs are actually quite cool

Gattaca is a statement about the human species which I agree with in many ways. If you think social engineering is fantasy, just spend a year in Singapore and tell me if the elitism doesn’t remind you of Gattaca.
