Who invented marriage?

September 3, 2008

I went to Yahoo Answers to try and get an answer to this question. Guess what I found.

“Marriage was created by people wanting to spend their entire lives together, yet were unable to make it 20 without being eaten by dinosaurs” – Capbarro

and this:

“Photographers, videographers, florist, DJ’s and wedding venues.” – Blunt

I don’t know who invented marriage but it must have been a modern invention. You won’t find any evidence of marriage among cavemen. Not that they had any photographers and wedding boutiques back then and besides, everyone was too busy running away from old t-rex to worry about wedding receptions.

Marriage would have been nasty business anyway. Can you imagine the unbrushed teeth, body odor, and a really really bad wedding gown. Yecchhh.

Fast forward a few millenia and up pops an invention called the arranged marriage. I commented in this post that arranged marriages might actually last longer (though are not necessarily happier) than the modern free-ranging types, least of all the Brad-and-Angeline kind. LC provided a good comment on that.

I have a theory. Arranged marriages last because its not about you. Its about the arranger gaining social or financial advantage by pairing you up with a certain family. In the bigger scheme of things it makes you a means to an end. The biological act of raising a family cements the tie. Marriage is simple and functional. Husband gets the money, wife cooks and cleans. None of that XOXO stuff (hugs and kisses). Ask your grandparents if they relate to this.

That’s yesterday. Today’s marriages are no longer functional. They’re emotional. How and why it made this turn I have no idea but in a marriage of emotion, your marriage can end up like a drunken pilot. Up one moment, down the next. An arranged marriage on the other hand is like a tank. It never goes down, even if you’re married to a psycho or a Britney.

By the way if you’re wondering why I’m suddenly writing about marriage, its because a friend of mine in California got married last weekend. All the best to you guys, Jon and Beth, if you’re reading this. 8)

LOL I enjoy your cynical and yet practical view on marriage dude.

I unfortunately am a hopeless romantic and want to be there for the whole vomit-in-the-toilet mushy wushies and xoxox’s…lol

Hey thanks. Nothing wrong in being a hopeless romantic. Enjoy it while it lasts! 🙂

I’m a hopeless romantic too although I think people who decides to jump into the bandwagon has a humongous death wish, plus I’ve seen too many failed marriages this year alone. The idea of marriage is two people needing to witness each other’s life but the who invested marriage? How the heck would I know. Okay, so I quoted from Susan Sarandon (Shall We Dance?). Sorry psychobabling, it happens when my thoughts are all over the place. 😀

You got your finger right on the button. Arranged marriages are not about ME. It’s about US. It’s about the whole family on both sides. Sometimes it includes the whole community. And they’re mostly functional and rarely emotional. As I said before, today it’s all about the individual. Perhaps we can blame it on urbanization.

I do know friends who had arranged marriages and it does seem that their view of marriage is rather different. They are looking for a life partner and when the marriage is arranged, all they need to do is to start living as married couple. It never cross their mind to consider whether it will work or not. They get married and they start working at living as a couple and loving each other for the rest of their lives. There is no back door like divorce.

@dee, marriage a death wish? Why does that sound like cigarettes. I want it so bad but I know it’ll kill me. LOL. I don’t smoke btw.

@lc, I think its evolution. I wonder what marriage will evolve to next.

@pebbles, yeah I’ve heard similar. It sounds like a business partnership, LOL. 🙂

Yeah ! Marriage does not exist during cavemen or even the prehistoric. Who invented Marriage? I think its our great, great, great parents, grandparents or our ancentors with God blessing. At that time or the old traditional time, its improper for the male and female to stay together and doing stuff. So in order to fix/protect it, marriage was created so as the couple will respect, care and love each other. But later on, human has take marriage for granted eg the possessive type, slavery, high expectation…etc. Because too busy in this physical world and earning money for survival sake, human then started to forget their real purpose on earth is to learn to know yourself again and forgot how to go home. Thats how transmigration began.

This is also happen to many meateater nowadays. In the beginning/prehistoric or long long time ago, people don’t eat animal. They only eat plants or fruits where the forest is still lushful. So they’re feeding themself a plant/fruit-based diet. And some, they don’t eat, the one who came direct immediately from heaven. At that time, from the very beginning, the human race were divine nature. They did not eat. And then sometimes, they suddenly see some foam from sea & they just frolicking with the water, taste it & it taste so sweet. That was nectar, in the beginning, the sea was not salted like was it is now. It offered some good, like a foam of sweetness nectar so they took it & ate it. They didn’t really take it, it just come into their mouth & they eat it & then one tell to another & they begin eating that.

And later the more they eat, the more they become heavy. They could not fly anymore. They use to fly like bird without wings & lived freely one another, men & women like the story of Eden. So slowly they eat that & some more things & become more hungry.
Then they eat more of this crawling stuff & also eat fruit/vegetable. That was fine for a while but the more they eat of anything that grow on the earth, the less they be able to fly or to be the ones they use to be when they first came. So they have to walk now, find food & all that. And that was okay until some people picked up some of the burnt animals that had been burnt by the fire of the forest. They tried it because they were hungry & the more they eat, the more they’re hungry now.
Before, they didn’t know what hunger is, then they begin eating things & become more hungry & so when they could not find any plant things to eat at that time. Maybe the forest was on fire or something somehow they picked up the dead body of the animals. Some people tried it b’coz they were hungry & it tastes okey to them, feel satisfied for a while, think okay to eat that & then they keep relying on that. And after they don’t have these burnt or natural death animals to eat anymore, they go out hunting chasing animals & kill them to eat.

And that’s how it begins & its a sad story. And then that knowledge is passed on to the next, next & the next generation & that is where we are right now, in our state of being. So we have to return to the Eden state of existence, the plant/fruit-based diet so that we can go back to the divine nature that we are.

Sorry, suppose to talk about marriage but jump to meateating. This is just one of the infos i would like to share.

Hi stella, you sound like a true vegetarian, am I right? 🙂

I don’t know if you notice it but meat eaters have a different body smell than vegetarians. I’m conscious of that, even if I just walk past someone. Thanks to my super-sensitive nose, haha.

Yeah, you’re right. I’m a vegetarian that do not consume egg (lacto-vegetarian). Plan to be vegan. But not succeed yet b’coz unable to let go some of the food that have milk substances. Though i don’t really like milk directly. Maybe later. Have been a veg for 12 years plus 3 yrs learning to be veg for spiritual purpose. Well, its not very hard to be veg, yet i find its very easy & a simple lifestyle.

You do have a super-duper sensitive nose. Hehe. You’re conscious b’coz you’re a veg and your consciousness has changed for the better & has gone up to a higher level. Meat eaters do have different body smell b’coz they’re adding poisonous food(meat) into their spiritual body. But I’m not that sensitive enough (probably not well in meditation). I do feel terrible if i pass by market that sell meat. I’m sensitive if people is smoking or drinking. If i accidentedly ate food that have nonveg ingredient eg eggs (some veg product do not state clearly their ingredient product), i might have a stomach-ache.

Because of global warming that are now facing on Earth, so i will try to encourage whomever people i meet to change their diet to vegetarian in order to save Earth. But sometime I’m having hard time to convince them. Especially close relative. People are very funny & ignorant about vegetarian. They thought that vegetarian is a religious thing & is a monk/nun always do. So they’re scare they will be like them(this is according to some chinese). Some chinese do like to eat veg but only 1st & 15th of lunar month & will try to eat less meat. Many complain its not healthy & expensive. Veg nowadays is very costly. So i would advise them to cook at home. Some wanted to wait until they’re old to be veg. I think by that time, they do not have any strenght and stamina to practice & many animal would die already. Most will consider eating less meat. So only some animal be able to save. They do not understand the survival of this planet depends on them.

The planet Mars is similar like Earth and has been experienced climate change. The warning came like 20 or so years Earth time to them. The last urgent signs they had were about five years before the destruction. They did have a chance, but they did not do it. What i mean is follow a veg diet. Some of the survival martian now live underground. But when earthling landed in Mars, they couldn’t find anything. Planet Mars is also known as red planet. Its red because there have been war before & now its only gas, dust, toxins & pollution. They developed too fast & turned bad. Not spiritual enough. If we Earth people are not careful, we’ll also become like that later. Check this story regarding Boriska, the kid from Mars. Pls type the sentences b’coz I have forgotten the website.

If we don’t have enough virtuous people & not many people turn to veg, then two third or half population of Earth inhabitant will vanish. If more people turn to veg, then we will gain more time to rescue Earth and the life of the planet. Truly, the cyclones, nargis, earthquake, sunspot exploding, volcano explosion in the middle of Earth, predicted comet hit the Earth will all be stop & the Ice will stop melting & become to the natural state like before ….etc only if human inhabitants start changing to a loving-diet, vegetarian.

I hope you will do your small part of encourage people to a compassionate way of life, vegetarian as now you’re a veg for the sake of saving others & yourself. Everyone has to wake up & realize that we don’t have much time left. We still have hope & can still save the Earth if humanity has the urgency to change to veg & stop the main cause disaster, that is killing(whether human or animal.) Its not an easy task b’coz people habit is difficult to change. But just hope for the best.

Vegetarian diet is a moral code of being a human. Its not religious. It is a mark of a great humans. If animals are abused & badly treated, then they will be in a higher heaven. But human who have done all this will pay terribly & cause them to lose spiritual merit because of killing animals/meat eating. But if human change, then all shall be forgiven. They even have a place in Heaven if they turn to veg.

Animals will also stop eating meat if the human beings become veg. Example Yogananda’s book, “The Autobiography of a Yogi?” He recounted the lion that didn’t eat meat at all. She even refused meat when somebody offered it to her, because she stayed with her master who was a yogi and who was a vegetarian. So, if more people are vegetarian, the atmosphere will change into a higher level of compassion and love, then the animals will also be affected and they will change their nature. That day might come soon. Who knows? Be positive.

Most of this infos are from my Master saying. I hope you didn’t fall asleep reading such a long letter. Bye.

If its true that you are what you eat, then soon I’ll be turning into a carrot, haha!

One day when there are no more animals left to eat, people will be forced to eat vegetarian. If you do some research, you’ll find that scientists are already inventing chemical based food. Whether humans will become better after that I don’t know.

In the 1960s there was a pop song that went…
    “in the 2525…..
..Everything you think, do and say,
Is in the pill you took today…”

It may happen. Unless we source energy to fuel us into other planets. Or we better believe there’s a God.

I was thinking about getting married; I was told to read my bible and listen to what the King James version says about divorced persons whose spouse is alive. Well I thought oh well I will look up marriage and learn about how marriage licences came about well I have not found this information. I will continue my cross reference work; I still want to get married but I donot want to displease God. What do have to say about that ?

Errrr… I’m the last person you wanna ask about marriage, but welcome to my blog anyway. 😀
