The Twins

September 27, 2008

Note: These come from my own personal observations. I may be proven wrong of course. πŸ™‚

The twins I mean are awareness and thought. They look the same but are actually very different. To see how they’re different, compare these two statements.

A: “Its red.”

B: “Its red. Oooh, I so love that color!”

A: “Its $39.95.”

B: “$39.95?? Wtf, its only $21 at the other store!”

A illustrates the simple awareness of a fact. B is a thought that does a couple of laps around your mind and comes out as a judgemental opinion.

When the mind notes a fact, it is aware. The pen is blue, the shirt is red, the clock is on the right wall, the time now is 9.30 pm. There is no emotion, just a subconscious mental process of registering a fact. Thinking on the other hand is part imagination part opinon. Its not necesarily based on fact.

Awareness can happen while thought is switched off and vice versa. Recall how sometimes you’re so deep in thought you’re unaware that the traffic light has turned green, and other times when you only see the traffic light and completely forget what you were thinking about.

Some of us are more non-aware than others:

  • Officer, I wasn’t aware this was a one-way street.
  • I wasn’t aware you could get cancer by eating this.
  • I didn’t know they close on weekends. We wasted 2 hours for nothing.
  • I wasn’t aware the fuel tank was empty!

As you can imagine, a person with a low awareness level can find life very expensive or stressful.

Awareness is not the same as intelligence. You can be highly aware but not very intelligent, in which case you might lead a problem-free albeit simple life. If you are highly intelligent but not very aware, you’ll enjoy the bounty of your intelligence but you’ll also be cursing at all the “bad luck” you seem to be attracting.

And that’s where I see the link. The more stressful life is, the more unaware or ignorant one seems to be. If you know someone with a habit of being unaware of traffic light changes or unaware that the front door was left unlocked when one goes out, you can predict the sort of life he or she leads.

So, awareness is not thinking. Its simply the ability of your subconscious mind to register the stuff around you.

It is possible to develop awareness but thats a different story altogether. My point is, look at your own lives. If its been one hellish trip so far, check your awareness meter. You could be due for an overhaul.

Shouldn’t these red pills be in the *other* blog? πŸ™‚

Hi, since I also use the word awareness on this blog, I felt I should explain its grammatical meaning here. I try to keep the metaphysicals in the red pill area. πŸ™‚
