How to screw your future with the Internet

January 6, 2009

From a New York Times article:

“Teenagers often use social networking sites like MySpace to post intimate personal information they come to regret, as it lets future employers (or online predators) learn about sex activity and substance abuse.”

The internet’s a hit with the youngsters and those who write faster than they think. Many of them still don’t get it.

They don’t understand that whatever indiscretion they excitedly write about online can (and will, if you are destined to be a famous person some day) resurface at the most inconvenient times, usually long after it had been forgotten.

So you’ve become the CEO of a big company and speaking to reporters on live TV when one of them asks, “According to Google cache, when you were 20 you were arrested at a sex party and you were taking drugs. You blogged about it. Can you tell us how long were you doing it and are you still doing it now?”

How do you explain something like that to your staff? Your board of directors or shareholders? Your clients? Your family?

People often forget the things we say. The internet unfortunately never forgets.

Moral: For certain things, its better to let your mouth do the talking than your hands.

There are certain things which are best left unsaid…hidden in that little secret chamber of yours forever. đŸ˜‰

True. Unfortunately many people don’t realize that until its too late…

By the time these teenagers reach CEO age, I doubt such behavior will still be deemed ‘immoral’. As we see even today, those big names (e.g. ‘I didn’t inhale’ Clinton) brought down by scandals are still surviving and earning big bucks giving speeches as leaders. In time, such behavior will be brushed off as ‘sowing wild oats’.

But I really hope I’m wrong.

The ghost of Monica Lewinsky hasn’t completely left Bill and its hard to see him serving officially (apart from giving speeches for the foundation which is unofficial) without being hammered by his enemies. If it was Europe though, it wouldn’t matter. But while Italy had a transvestite as an elected official, its anyone’s guess if conservative SE Asia would be so accomodating anytime soon.
