A conversation with a control freak

March 4, 2009

What’s the difference between a circus and a whorehouse?

In a circus, you get cunning stunts. In a whorehouse, you get stunning… uhhh … never mind.

Every now and then, someone comes along and gives me a whole new perspective into the fascinating world of human interaction. Ok, maybe being only 20 something I haven’t seen everything so forgive me if you’ve seen this before.

So one time I met this guy whose most favorite response seemed to be, “Its not about the (fill in the topic that you brought up),” like:

You: Its been hot lately hasn’t it?

He: Its not about being hot or what.”

You: I think there’s a problem with the sound.”

He: Its not about the sound or what.

You: This is too salty.

He: Its not about salty or what.

His sentences would curiously end with “..or what,” I suppose to tell you that anything else you bring up is irrelevant.

Bear in mind, I only knew this guy 15 minutes and already he was giving me a whole new approach to winning friends and influencing people, and that is:

1. Always disagree with anything the other person says. It sets up a nice atmosphere where your opinions count and theirs don’t.

2. After you’ve fixed the pecking order, nail down your authority by saying listen kid, this is how it really is.

3. Repeat 1 & 2 everytime your new friend opens his mouth. You will control the direction of the conversation and the other guy will eventually take the cue and become your yes-man.

Of course they risk a bloody nose when pulling this sort of stunt, figuratively speaking, but I can see how control freaks would have this gem in their bag of tricks.

We were there to talk business and he was testing the waters, as was I.  He didn’t get very far. About 20 minutes later I thanked him and left him with the cafe bill.

His business proposition was a poor fit to what I was doing anyway.

But good thing I ordered the most expensive thing on the menu, hehe. 8)

but mostly the man who does all the talking is the one normally pays the bills unfortunetly

Sometimes the guy who talks the most gets the bill. 🙂

Doesn’t that sound like you’re talking about Dilbert’s Mr Topper?

Not familiar with whorehouses, but do they actually display the stunning ones? Hahaha…

There are many Topper wannabes running around, most of them residing in Singapore. 🙂

Not sure about the whorehouse myself but I suppose if you pay the right price…

We see such people all the time…but fr my experience, people will just say “I know where you’re coming from, BUT….” 😛

So nobody wants to talk to those people 😛

At least they offer a concession by acknowledging where you’re coming from. Some of the alpha males won’t even care where you come from because its not a consideration in their plan. If you call their bluff, they usually back down though. 🙂
