Truth in advertising

May 12, 2009

I was watching the Spanish Grand Prix live on telly over the weekend and couldn’t help but notice the TV commercials (TVC) from Total, the French oil and gas company. I’m not sure if they are a team sponsor or event sponsor but they sure are pouring a lot of money into it.

What caught my eye was the TVC’s tagline – “Anything for you” that was repeated over and over in their jingle. And of course that got me and my buddies cynical. “Think we could get their CEO to dress up like a monkey and climb up a pole on Orchard Road?” joked Sim. “Yeah, how about getting their lady VP to run around the staduim naked. And make sure she’s hot,” laughed Alan.

With that kind of tagline, they’re asking for it. Of course we all knew what Total meant but its nice to make fun of them anyway.

But this “I’ll do anything for X.” I notice lots of people say that, when X = a certain young lady, and especially when X = money.

So today I want to imagine if there are people who will actually, really do ANYTHING for money.

Let’s say you are a corporate hotshot, well-known among your peers, raking in half a million bucks a year. The recession came and your plum job goes up in smoke. You had dumped your money into high-end properties and are committed to paying a mortgage of $15,000 a month for the next 20 years. Your income is now exactly $0.00 and your savings won’t last you 3 months. Your job search turns out fruitless. In desperation, a thought flashes in your mind. “I’ll do anything for money.”

So here’s a test so see if you really mean ANYTHING. Would you…

  1. Rob a bank
  2. Become a male porn star
  3. Sell your left kidney
  4. Become a scam artist
  5. Set up a lowly hawker stall (and risk bumping into your friendly competitors from the corporate world)
  6. Deliver pizza

Or does your version of “anything” exclude a few things like the above…

5,6 sound okay for me because when i’m desperate, those 2 things do sound ok for me. the rest? too high risk for my taste. rob a bank and i might get jailed for life.

    let’s skip 2.

sell kidney…i have limited edition…so not really good for long term planning. LOL.

    scam artist, same as (1).

as for (2)…mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. not for me, but i’m sure some guys are willing to do it for free. LOL.

Ah, so you’re not one of them who’ll do “anything” for money then. πŸ˜€

I resort to 5 or 6 most likely. 1 & 3 is out – too scary; can means jail/death. 4. Not creative enough. 2. Female porn star, may consider if too desperate and see the amount of remuneration first. ^_^

For kiasu reasons, I wonder how many corporate high flyers would really get down to selling chicken rice at the coffee shop. The higher people climb the harder it is to fall.

    eh , becoming a porn star isn’t so bad ..i mean , we’re guys right ?

other guys would get jealous if i am banging a hottie on dvd

Porn star = notoriety, short life, lotsa cash. Hmm… doesn’t sound too bad does it. πŸ˜€

‘A good teacher is one who has the ability to make others think’. That sounds like a quote from somewhere, but I just can’t remember where. But you seem to have that talent to do that with your line about people doing anything for money.:)

But of course, there are folks who’d do anything for love; for the family, friends, the country, for principles or their religion, all in positive (non-destructive) ways.

Sometimes we have to realize, all we need in the end is a 6 foot hole in the ground (if there’s any ground left) and there’s nothing much we can take along with us. And all that we get to enjoy is only ‘borrowed or rented’. Only thing we can do is make the best use of whatever.
And then leave it all with just a smile, knowing we’ve left something good for those who come after us.

IMO, the only time a person will do anything is when he has lost everything.
