Poor people are more charitable than rich people

June 13, 2009

The less you have the more likely you are to give. That’s what the research data says.

There are many speculations why this is so. My favorite explanation is that rich people hardly come into contact with poor people and hence are less likely to have an opportunity to give. When they do, its often to well-advertised charities rather than to an individual.

Poor people, on the other hand, tend to live among other poor people. They can relate to the suffering first hand so they are likely to be more charitable.

What is your favorite explanation?

Do the poor give more than the rich?

America’s poor are its most generous givers.

yeah , it happens in church …

when you just start out working making 3-4k a month ..you’re super open to the 10% off your salary and so ..as your money grows , you start making 6-7k …when you strive to be a millionaire then the pain comes in πŸ™‚

Yup, the more we make, the less money we seem to have. its one of life’s mysteries. πŸ™‚

Really?, I always thought if one were rich one can afford to give more for charity voluntarily. Charity begins at home, start with the self first. Example, if one only have so little how can one give. This is something new to me.

Yes they can afford to give but whether they will actually give is another question.

I just finished reading “The Joy Of Not Working” By Ernie Zelinski.
Reminded me of this discussion. A good READ!

    Power to you then. πŸ™‚

Coz the rich people think by not giving away money, they will end up richer? That’s also why nearly > 50% of the rich people i know are stingy folks. πŸ˜›

or, as you said, rich people mostly don’t go near or live with the poorer folks. they only go thru charity organizations….and with so many rumors/news on them (the charity org) swallowing the donations….i’m not surprised that these rich folks end up not donating at all. why donate when the money will not be given to those poor people?

as for the poorer people. they tend to go straight to the poor folks, people who need the donations. not via charity org, etc.

In the US, I’ve seen millionaires write big checks to charity but would spurn a homeless man that comes to them for a dollar as they wait for their limo pickup. Its confusing to see two very different sides from the same man. Many wealthy people give but have absolutely no idea what their recipients are going through. Sadly most times, they don’t wanna know.

    well.. it depends..
we do see rich people giving more too..
but based on the research.. perhaps the likelihood of a poor person giving is higher..
    just my 2cents =)

You’re right. Rich people give more per donation, sometimes thousands of dollars, whereas poor people can only give a few cents. In total it could come to a similar amount. A rich person giving $1k provides the same amt as 1,000 poor people giving $1 each.
