And you thought free was really free… Haha

September 30, 2009

There was a time when free meant free. I mean no money required, no time bomb, no hidden surprises.

Somehow the world changed while I slept. Try googling up “free software” or “free downloads” and see what you get.

Yeah, free software does not always mean free software.

What they mean is that you can download it at no charge. However it costs only USD$ 99.99 to use.

Its a bit like saying we have free cars for you. To use one, just pay us $200,000!

Wtf….

How come there’s suddenly a huckster behind every word “free.”

So I looked around to find out when they changed that part of the English language and this is what I found.

“What is Free Software? Free in Free Software is referring to freedom, not price.”

Source.

Can you beat that? Lol .. 😀

Wonder what else they changed while I was asleep.

You just grew up one more notch (while asleep… :D). When the Hongkees coined the phrase ‘No free lunch’, they know what they were telling the rest of us.

My wife was once out in the porch and a sales person came by to announce we got a lucky break. Our house number came up in a draw and we got freebies. All we need to do was…. bla…bla… Wifey stopped her and told her to move on. The sales person mumbled something that sounded like, ‘stupid… free also don’t want…’ Who’s stupid enough to believe an old story like this?

Yeah, the world’s a fishing pond and freebies are bait. I actually know one guy who wanted every penny back by making off with as many packets of packaged jam, ketchup and cutlery he could get from burger joints. What he doesn’t know is that it will only raise the operating cost of the restaurant and that will find its way into his bill as higher prices. No way to win this game.
